Imagine a game show.
It's a pretty ordinary game show. It's a contestant-vs-computer thing. The contestant sits in a chair and is presented with a board full of letters. Words are read out by the computer, and the contestant has to spell them with the available letters. There's a time limit. There's a "custodian" for each contestant, whose job it is to clear the board after every level. This is a task that could obviously be done by a computer, but it provides a bit of visual flourish. But part of the premise of the game is that each custodian has a disability. Some are more visible than others.
So you beat a certain number of levels and get advanced to the final level, which is you vs another contestant - each of you trying to beat a fiendishly difficult level in a short timespan. If you beat both the computer and the other contestant, fine, you win a decently-sized lump sum. And you also win something for your custodian. Something that the game show only calls "Shelter". They don't disclose what this is, but after a custodian has taken someone through to the final level and won, they are never seen on the game show again.
There might be something, too, with how far their contestants get having some kind of effect on their health. Either way, this is all looking pretty bad for the custodians. Not sure how they are recruited for a job like this, but I'm pretty sure they don't have much say in the matter.
(I'm thinking that if I were to write this, my protagonists would be custodians, and they would be looking for a way to bring down this show and all the shows like it, and to find out what "shelter" is and what happens to all the custodians who have gone before.)
