Does anyone know offhand if Spike ever got his chip out? Or deactivated?

This is, believe it or not, necessary for fic.

He did get the chip out. S7, I believe. Buffy made the Initiative take it out because it was malfunctioning or something? I can't remember exactly, but he definitely got it out.
