Calder Mackie
Name: Calder Mackie, known to just about everyone as Cal
Age: 20
Cal Mackie was born into a farming community, the second of four children. He grew up, like his brothers and sister, working the farm his parents owned. When Cal was 14, his younger brother, Finlay, then 10, was killed when a horse panicked and trampled him. Cal, who loved Finlay dearly, took this very hard and found life on the farm very difficult after that - he was angry, resentful, and felt trapped. When he was 15, Cal stole some money from his parents and jumped aboard a carriage that was headed to the capital city.
When he arrived, he discovered that city life was harder than he expected. In the beginning he regularly didn't earn enough to feed himself, never mind get a roof over his head. He took whatever jobs he could find, from sweeping floors to lifting crates, but found it hard to settle into a life. When he'd been in the city about eight months, he met a much older man, Kevin. Kevin worked for a family called the Dumaynes and began to offer Cal work as hired muscle - nothing too hard at first, standing behind someone and looking intimidating while vague threats were made. It paid better than sweeping floors, and Cal didn't mind the work. He certainly didn't mind Kevin, who seduced him. Cal rapidly fell for Kevin.
As time went on Cal began to be offered more involved work - first intimidating people who owed money to the Dumaynes, then delivering beatings. Finally, Kevin gave him an assignment to kill a merchant who had refused to pay protection money. Cal did the deed, but was immediately horrified at what he had done. Racked with guilt, Cal broke things off with Kevin and swore he would never take money from the Dumaynes again. He returned to the honest work he'd been doing before, odd jobs and grunt work. That was nearly two years ago.
A year ago, Cal was approached by someone else working for the Dumaynes - this time by a woman, Marissa. Marissa said she wanted to hire him for a slightly different kind of work. No more murders, she promised. Instead she wanted to hire him as a bodyguard for the nephew of Isabelle Dumayne herself. Cal wrestled with himself, but eventually decided that the money was too good; he had to take the job. The bodyguard job was supposed to be simple, a single night while the nephew, Vincent, negotiated a settlement with a rival family. The negotiations went south, and it was teamwork that got both Cal and Vincent out alive. Cal, who thought he had put Vincent's life at risk by misjudging the situation, was surprised when Vincent sent Marissa to hire him for a second job.
The second job led to a third, and a fourth, and within a few weeks Cal was working regularly as a bodyguard for Vincent. And over the next few months, they became friends, and eventually - after admitting to one another that neither of them wanted to keep working for the Dumaynes - lovers. Over time, Vincent has given Cal a few expensive gifts, including the chain shirt he uses for armour and the pack of cards he sometimes drags out when he's bored; but almost none of the money that Vincent has access to is his own. It all belongs to his Aunt Isabelle, the head of the family. Cal is now actively looking for any job that pays well, preferably with as little connection to the Dumaynes as possible - he's stashing money in the hopes that he'll be able to take Vincent and leave the city for good, starting a new life somewhere far, far away.
